SONGWRITER SERIES

On Wednesday evenings, Papa Charlie’s transforms into a listening room showcasing the Midwest’s top songwriters in a theater-like setting. The safe and intimate room with great sound gives the audience an opportunity to immerse into the stories and craft of the song.

Charlie Parr

Many people play roots music, but few modern musicians live those roots like Minnesota’s Charlie Parr. Played on National resonator guitar, 12-string guitar, and occasionally banjo, Parr’s heartfelt and plaintive original folk blues and traditional spirituals don’t strive for authenticity — they are authentic. An easily confused and very shy individual, Charlie Parr has been traveling around singing his songs ever since leaving Austin Minnesota in the 1980's in search of Spider John Koerner, whom he found about 100 miles north at the Viking Bar one Sunday night. The experience changed his life, made him more or less unemployable, and brings us to now: 13 recordings, 250 shows a year or more, 200,000 miles on a well broke in Kia, and a nasty fear of heights. Resonator-fueled folk songs from Duluth Minnesota.

Please Note: In an effort to create a listening room environment, we ask all guests in the main room to limit conversation during the performance.
